25. Hybrid Lagoon Performance Record
(7):Starch Wastewater Treatment Tests, from 1985

Photo 16. The panorama of "HLS".

In September 1985, hybrid lagoon facilities, excavated with out timbering, were constructed within the ? Hokuei Shoji ? Koyo Rationalized Starch Plant, located in Kiyosatomachi, Hokkaido, for test purposes. Tests of high-level treatment of waste water containing potato starch were conducted from September until November 10, and surveys were conducted of the denitrification of separator waste water and decanter waste water, as well as of the power consumed, volume load, and generation of excess sludge. Survey results were satisfactory, and indicated that despite the short test period, processed water attained levels of 14 mg/liter BOD, for an elimination rate of 99%, and ll.3 mg/liter T-N, for a nitrogen elimination rate of 95%. As a consequence, it was demonstrated that hybrid lagoon facilities are an effective means of preventing eutrophication, a problem expected to take on greater urgency in Hokkaido in the near future. Survey conducted September to November 1985; conducted by ? Hokueil ShoJi Rationalized Starch Plant, with the cooperation of Tsurumi Manufacturing Co., Ltd. and analyses performed by Hiyoshi Welfare Work Company
