23. Hybrid Lagoon Performance Record
(5): High-Level Treatment of Human Waste from 1982.

Photo 14. The panorama of "HLS"

In May 1982, aerators and instrumentation and control equipment were installed in an existing treatment basin (basin capacity 1,500 m3) at the Kurotaki plant in Nangoku City, Kochi Prefecture, thereby converting these facilities into LLSB activated sludge treatment facilities. These facilities are employed in treatment of 50 kiloliters of human waste daily, with 200% dilution processing.

These facilities consist of a single basin of simple construction, modified from the existing box-type basin, and are employed in non-continuous processing. Through automatic control using dissolved oxygen wave forms, precise control of the microorganism nitration and denitration action is simple, and when combined with post-coagulation processing, excellent denitrification and dephosphorization performance is achieved, with the electric power cost at about JPY 500 per kiloliter.

As these facilities are located at a distance of 15 km from the Nangoku City Hall, telephone circuits and microcomputers (FM-8) are employed to transmit measured wave forms for remote monitoring of facility performance.
