22. Hybrid Lagoon Performance Record
(4): High-Level Treatment of Human Waste 1985

Photo 13. The panorama of "HLS"

To demonstrate technology for high-level treatment by the hybrid lagoon automatic control system, in December 1985 facilities for treatment of human waste (10 k liters daily) were constructed within the Sewage Treatment Plant of Sadowaramachi in Miyazaki Prefecture. The purpose of these tests. in addition to demonstration of the performance of hybrid lagoon automatic control systems, was to perform tests required for adoption of the hybrid lagoon system as part of the Ministry of Health and Welfare's guidelines on human waste treatment facilities. Treatment performance was stable for 120 days after the initiation of operation; after 120 days had elapsed, the automatic control system was employed for automatic measurement and control of the amount of aeration. Automatic control of the amount of aeration is used in biological denitrification, with the amount of dilution within 500% (undiluted), and without addition of pure water methanol or other carbon sources except for ? elimination of foam nor with sludge circulation. The costs for operation of these facilities are JPY 650 for electric power, plus JPY 320 for coagulation, per k liter.
