9.Hybrid Lagoon Basin Construction.
(Cross-section, Lateral Section)

The cross-section of the basic hybrid lagoon basin construction has the shape of an inverted truncated cone; the center of the basin is made deep, so that sludge is able to circulate smoothly in the vertical direction. The depth of the center of the hybrid lagoon, and the degree of slope from the center to the walls, vary depending on the overall shape and size of the lagoon, and on the basic characteristics of the sludge. Hybrid lagoons may be made deeper than ordinary aerated lagoons; and lagoons with maximum water depths exceeding 10 m are possible, depending on the performance of the vertical aerators used.

The lateral shape of hybrid lagoons may either circular, elongated circular, elliptical or modified polygonal, in accordance with naturally appropriate shapes and the shape of the site used. However, the periphery of hybrid lagoons must be such that unregulated water flow and turbulence does not occur, that is, curved portions must be smooth. (Cf. Photos 10 through 24)
