1. Origins
of the Activated Sludge Treatment Method.
The
activated sludge treatment method (employing suspended
microorganisms) has been in use throughout the world since its
invention in Great Britain at the beginning of the 20th century.
On considering the development of technology for use in activated
sludge treatment, we may note a number of important milestones.
Establishment
of the biological explanation of activated sludge as consisting
of microorganisms.
Establishment
of engineering for continuous waste water treatment facilities:
Method
for calculating capacities of biological reaction basins;
Method
for calculating amount of oxygen required:
Method
for calculating water area load in sludge separation basin;
Method
for calculating amount of sludge returned.
Establishment
of technology for high-speed high-load processing, and other
advances.
Recognition
of the fact that the essence of activated sludge is
microorganisms, and the establishment of the standard activated
sludge treatment method, represent highly important events in
human history.
